avon town council candidate forum 2018
High Five Access Media announces a public forum featuring candidates for the 2018 Avon Town Council election.
The campaign season is expected to be lively with eight candidates on the ballot to fill four slots. The forum takes place Oct. 4 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Avon Town Council chambers at 1 Lake Street, Avon, Colorado. The forum will offer an opportunity for the Avon electorate to evaluate candidates in a side-by-side forum. Each candidate will have equal time to answer questions on a variety of topics, which will be presented by moderator Rich Carroll.

Can’t make it to the Vail America Days Parade? Want out-of-town family to check out your float? High Five Access Media has viewers covered.
The local community access television station will be live from Lionshead with host Gretchen Pleshaw with a short preshow beginning at 10:30 a.m. before the parade arrives in Lionshead. At that point, High Five Access Media will toss play-by-play coverage to local voice Tony Mauro.

Summer 2018 Media Making Camp
Are you an Eagle County student looking for something to do this summer? Want to improve your media-making skills and share your point of view with the community? Then join High Five Access Media for a youth media camp July 30 to Aug. 3.
This intensive, weeklong camp empowers youth to create media that gives voice to their viewpoints on social justice issues affecting the community. The culmination of the camp includes a final video project on an issue decided upon and produced by students.

Literacy for a Digital World
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) recently conducted the largest study of fake news to date. It found Twitter users are 70 percent more likely to re-tweet a false story than a true one, and fabricated stories reach 1,500 views six times faster. Even more alarming is a majority of adults in the United States get their news from social media, while 59 percent of links shared on social media have never been clicked, according to the Pew Research Center. You may wonder why people fall easily for false stories, especially with the ability to fact check stories with a few clicks.
An obvious reason is lack of digital literacy. Digital literacy is the ability to use information and communication technologies to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information, requiring both cognitive and technical skills. Fake news preys on people’s lack of digital illiteracy.

But what happens after you've completed a workshop? Oftentimes, you're feeling overwhelmed and uncomfortable with the video-making process. The key to getting better is practice, and tutorials offer a great way to gain experience at your own pace. Fortunately, the Eagle Valley Library District makes access to tutorials simple, and free. The library provides cardholders with a subscription to Lynda.com. For those of you unfamiliar with Lynda, it's a website focused on providing users with video tutorials on a variety of subjects, including "business, software, technology and creative skills," according to the site.
